Trench coats are -and have been- the most popular coats in America. The first trench coat was actually developed as an alternative to the heavy serge “greatcoats” worn by British and French soldiers in the First World War. The trench coat was created by Thomas Burberry, who submitted his trench coat design for an army officer’s raincoat to the United Kingdom War Office in 1901. The trench coat has had a big role in fashion: from comic book mystery characters to the last scene in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Audrey Hepburn!). Like the Chanel suit and the Birkin bag, the trench coat will always be one of fashion’s most iconic pieces.
