Looking for a great way to simultaneously spite the recession and add some heavy-duty innovation to your closet? A pair of handmade aluminum shoes from German industrial designer Christian Werner, with a price tag that nears $4,000, should do the trick. While I can’t condone the price, I do love the idea: Werner’s Zoe shoe riffs on the classic wedge by subtracting the volume and rendering the silhouette in ultra-strong and lightweight aluminum. And look at the cost factor this way: With its sculptural lines and innovative materials, the Zoe could not only be added to your growing shoe closet, but could also be considered your first investment in art!
